MORE ABOUT THIS COFFEE

ABOUT THE WASHING STATION

Buying this IMPACT-certified coffee from the Kibingo washing station supports a flagship IMPACT Beyond project that sets up livestock solidarity chains, helping coffee-farming families get access to livestock.

As part of the Beyond flagship programmes, the initiative supports higher incomes, access to microcredit, women's entrepreneurship and inputs for organic farming, among other things, towards IMPACT's living-income goal.

The Kibingo washing station is in Kayanza, in northern Burundi, at 1,893 metres above sea level. The farms on the surrounding hills that supply it sit between 1,700 and 1,900 metres. Kibingo works with 1,739 registered farmers spread over 18 hills. All farmers registered with a Greenco station are organised in groups of 30, each led by a farm leader who acts as spokesperson with the station.

The station has 10 fermentation tanks, 2 soaking tanks and a drying area with 165 drying tables and 4 pre-drying tables, and can process 750,000 kg of cherries a day. Farmers can get organic fertiliser made from composted coffee pulp, and low-cost, subsidised seedlings from the station's own nursery to help renew their farms.

The station also takes part in several support and agricultural extension projects, including a livestock project and initiatives to strengthen cooperatives and improve yields.
